David Smith’s Olint partners with iTradeFX in a US$100 giveaway to Jamaicans

November 30, 2007

gotradejamaica.jpgJamaica- David Smith, the Fx Chief of Jamaica, founder of OLINT the premier foreign exchange trading investment club has lent his name to iTrade online forex trading platform with this giveaway. The fullpage, full colour newspaper advertisement and the website says: David Smith is adding US$100 of his own money to Live Forex Trading Accounts for Jamaican Residents who open with iTradeFX between November 15th and December 31st this year at gotradejamaica.com. Of course MTI Traders is all over this, they have been the dominant forex trading educator brand in Jamaica. They have from day one marketed themselves as the company that taught David Smith what he knows. So this giveaway should not be suprising.

Purely, what a powerful affiliate marketing programme !Whoever thought this up, is very intuned with the psyche of the jamaican people has a great timing, it’s very Digicel-esque this offering. The question that’s been hounding me though is this, are Jamaicans really interested in learninig to trade forex themselves or do they simply want to understand how it works, so as to legitimise, fortify their decision to become investors in forex trading investment clubs. I’m sure that for every 100 people Market Traders Institute (MTI) trains in their programme, less than 10% actually become forex traders and do so consistently. Read more

This week in Foreign Exchange Trading and Jamaica

November 30, 2007

etoro-for-sc.jpg

Foreign exchange trading online and through investment clubs has been hot, hot news once again this past week, the controversy, the players, the self taught traders, the investment clubs are not going away right now, so we’re following it all. Here are the top stories this past week on eToro, Onlinefxtrading.net and Cashplusinvestment.com. 1 eToro gets a huge write up on Techcrunch. With the headline eToro Makes Forex Trade Child’s Play Techcrunch wrote “Israeli eToro is taking a novel approach in simplifying Foreign Exchange (Forex) trading by packaging the complicated concepts involved in trading one currency against another, in fun non-threatening wrappers. Just how big is Forex trading? Try an estimated $3.2 trillion in daily turnover—that’s ~35 times the average turnover of the NYSE. However, unlike stock trading which has been generally adopted by the mainstream, Forex trading to date has been mostly marginalized to professional traders. eToro wants to change all that. A Lobbying group for technology in the Caribbean?

November 30, 2007

by David Mullings

Being based in the US I constantly here about lobbyists and the companies they work for. Recently the cable industry had their lobbyists hard at work because the FCC was considering some changes.  When are we going to see lobbying groups in the Caribbean focused on communicating the views of the tech industry? I would certainly join one and pay a yearly membership fee in order to finally have a voice.

Doctors, teachers and so many others have their organizations to get their views across and we all know that politicians don’t pay you any mind unless there are lots of people behind it (or you have lots of money). I envision a Caricom-wide lobbying group with sub-groups within each country. There are many qualified people with high level government contacts who could be effective spokespersons for this lobby.Who is with me on wanting to see this come to fruition?

80% of Jamaican Small businesses not interested in being online?

November 29, 2007

cito.jpg

Opportunities Jamaica 2007-Eighty percent of Jamaican small and medium sized businesses surveyed by Central Information Technology office (CITO) in an ebusiness adoption survey said they had no interest at all in having a website. Of the surveyed group, 17% had a website and 4% had a website with ecommerce capabilities.

This as just one of the interesting tidbits I gathered at the ICT workshop at Opportunities Jamaica 2007 conference, staged by Jamaica’s investment agency, Jamaica Trade and Invest(JTI) formerly JAMPRO. Questions abound from this survey findings. 1. What is the nature of SMEs surveyed-what industries are they operating in, how long have theses businesses been open? 2. Is this survey reflecting the low level of internet penetration here of only 40% 3. The SMEs recorded disinterest, is it as a result of ignorance of the benefits of having a website as a marketing and revenue generating tool for their businesses?

Inside NBC/News Corp’s Hulu.com

by David Mullings

I was anxious to receive my invitation to beta test the new online video venture from NBC Universal and News Corp. - Hulu.com. The media had been touting it as a Youtube competitor that would be focused on professional content and I was eager to see exactly what it was and how it compared to Joost (see my previous post about my first week with Joost). There is no competition between Hulu and Youtube - I will go to Hulu for my professional content any day.

I know a thing or two about online video and always seek to keep abreast of new developments. Joost has been a welcome service but when combined with Hulu, I frankly begin to need my cable even less. Hulu has a decent library of content so far, ranging from older television shows like Airwolf to current shows like Family Guy and Heroes and even movies like Blues Brothers. Read more

Why Cable & Wireless sucks. And why I wish I lived in a FLOW Zone.

Internet Cyberia, Jamaica-It was supposed to be a simple thing. I was moving from one place to another, and I confirmed that my landline would be an easy transfer since it’s on the same exchange. I really was moving only about 3 miles from my previous apartment.

I moved in November 2006, I got the phone and internet transferred 5 day before Christmas 2006. Then it really got painful. Some claffie, forgot to complete the transfer documentation, so in March of 2007 my phone and internet went poof. When did my service return, 8 months later and it wasn’t a smooth return either-the landline worked but no internet, then the internet worked but I can’t make calls, only receive. Eight months for a phone and landline to be transferred in 2007, in Jamaica. It has not been a good year for me and CWJ.
