At the eCommerce Expo in Two Pics
April 12, 2008
I had a ball at the EMERGE eCommerce expo which was here in Kingston, Jamaica at the Hilton Hotel. It was a decent first start, looking forward to next year. The highlight for me was the conversations I had with entrepreneurs who are just bursting with passion for this thing we’ve all embraced called the Internet. These are two pics for now. I have more coming. In the first one, I’m sandwiched between Maurice McNaughton, Chief Technology Officer for Paymaster Group and Neif Neamatt from Digicel Jamaica Business Division. And no I didn’t stick Maurice in the eye. The Second one is Heather and Chad from Jamdeal.com. Chad is a pioneering tech entrepreneur who’s brought us eBay like sites for the Caribbean. (Disclosure: Chad is one of my business partners in Caribclix.com)

I studied marketing in business school and one of the most important things that has always stuck with me was the 5 P’s of Marketing – People, Place, Product, Promotion and Price. I later realized that some people were taught less than 5 and I personally came to believe that there should be 6 – Profit should matter as well. Read more
Deshoda,Jamaican CashPlus Blogger
April 4, 2008
![]()
Deshoda, give name Shonari Gow is the Jamaica blogger behind cashplusinvestment.com, which aggregates, news, opinion and information on the hot topic of forex trading, alternative investments schemes in Jamaica. The blog has a daily readership of 4,000 people who read upon and leave their comments on Cashplus, Olint, Worldwise and others. And oh yeah he’s making a couple hundred US dollars in the process. I asked him a few questions about blogging and how and why he got into it and what’s next for him.
SC: What got you into blogging and was cashplusinvestments.com your first blog?
DESHODA: I needed a place to gather my thoughts and put it on ‘paper’ so to speak, share my views with the world. My first blog was on the blogging platform blogger then i moved to the superior more professional platform…wordpress. After a few weeks i moved to a self hosted wordpress blog (wordpress.org) there i called my blog nuff CRAp (nuff Conscious Ramblings and Perspectives). Basically that was my eDiary reflecting all my crazy thoughts and views.
SC:The blog is successful when you look at the following parameters - great timing, in demand content generated by you and the site visitor, word of mouth plus search engine optimisation…would say this is somewhat of a blueprint other bloggers Caribbean and global can duplicate?
DESHODA:Yes it is but all of that will not mean anything unless the blogger adds new and fresh content to his/her blog. Something I have neglected to do sadly. Find a niche that you love (it woudn’t hurt if it was not a saturated niche) and add original and spicy content. Learn the tricks of the trade from blogs such as problogger and johnchow and you should do well. All this is not set in stone though mix and match, do a little trial and error and find your own style
SC: So you were making some nice US dollars, how did you do this?
DESHODA: Seeing that this was my first try at making money online i tried what was made readily available to me…google adsense. And in the words of John Chow I became a google whore.Ad placement generated alot of click throughs and significantly increased revenue. after a while i tried other ad networks and ad mediums such as in-text ads.
SC: What are you going to do to further develop cashplusinvestments.com?
DESHODA: Right now I have not added much content but I will be concentrating on established investment methods, ecommerce and simple financing. This will be done on a phase basis. Also a complete overall of the theme(site design) will be done to give the site a fresh new look.
SC: Do you expect Caribbean blogging to grow bigger than it already has and if yes what do you expect will fuel it?DESHODA: Caribbean blogging will definately grow bigger than it is now. People like me with a thirst for new technology and a drive to share what we know with the world will drive the movement. Once the masses understand that internet is the window to the world, not constrained by geographical boundaries and that everyone can start at the same level, Caribbean people will become a part of the general blogosphere adding their valuable piece to the pot.
SC: Who are your top 3 blogging mentors and name the one thing you’ve taken from each of them ?
DESHODA: Problogger.com—I love the layout of the blog, the diversity of topics and the simplicity of it allJohnchow.com—The monetizing of a blog and how to maximize profits.Siliconcaribe.com—One of the very first blogs that inspired me to start blogging.
SC: What’s your day job and what blogs if any do you have next?
DESHODA: I am a web administrator for redpeppermall.com I have placed the finishing touches on deshoda.com take a look, this will be my eye on the world, web and everything in between.
SC: What is the ultimate goal for your online pursuits ?
DESHODA: Simple. To achieve financial freedom. Note I did not say make money… I want to work on my own time, anywhere. I think the internet (blogging) can allow me.
