Apple has revealed – via a massive banner on its homepage – that the App Store has surpassed 500 million downloads. The company noted that it had reached 300 million downloads back on December 5th, meaning that 200+ million apps have been downloaded in just 5 weeks. The homepage ad also indicates that there are now more than 15,000 apps available.
As iLounge notes, this represents accelerating growth for app downloads, as it took 6 weeks for the download count to move from 200 to 300 million. Holiday sales of iPhone and the iPod Touch are likely responsible for a significant part of the surge – many developers reported 3-4x bumps in downloads on Christmas Day. More
