The relevance of mainstream coverage seems not to be an issue for this Internet Generation. I recently attended a rehearsal meeting for an upcoming event. About 10 people gathered to run through the agenda and to meet who was doing what and when. Then one person asked…so is the media coming? The chief organizer without missing a beat listed the names of two well trafficked and respected blogs and a Caribbean social network which covers events, take pictures and brands these pictures and puts them solely online. No one seemed perturbed by this announcement and less surprised at the response by mainstream media for the request for coverage was met with the usual we’ll see how the days events go to decide whether or not to send a reporter or photographer over.
So it made me ask this question…..is seeing and being seen online, getting “coverage” online and being able to share with friends in social networks, on twitter, by email, on instant messenger and by phone a fast growing appeal, reality even, with the clamour to be covered in the mainstream print and by tv stations dwindling?

Despite the current economic crisis, and the resulting chaos in the music industry, President of Myspace Music, Courtney Holt remains “cautiously optimistic” that they will remain successful in building an “innovative online business.”
In a recent interview, Holt told Billboard Mag that since he accepted the presidency at Myspace Music, they have:
- made tweaks to Myspace Music’s search engine
- added new playlist features
- improved the music player
These tweaks have contributed to:
- 40% spike in search engine traffic
- the creation of 105 million active playlists by Myspace Music users
- more than 5.3 billion average aggregate minutes spent listening to music in January alone
- new advertising partnerships with companies like, Toyota, Visa, McDonalds, Kmart and Adidas

How many social networks and how many social tools do you use regularly, daily even? I started to feel pretty overwhelmed the other day. You see, I run a boutique digital marketing agency and write this blog and with all the client work, keeping on point with information and trends in the Caribbean and globally…I use my blackberry to keep a record of God knows how long the list of usernames, passwords for all of the social networks, social tools that I test and also use regularly. So it made me slow down to take a look at myself and ask what exactly is my social media profile and what does it say about me if anything? So here goes.

I’m in the middle of creating an online publicity campaign for a client and found three free Caribbean-focused press release submission websites – caribpr.com which was the first PR wire of the Caribbean which is based in New York, caribbeanpressreleases.com which is out of Barbados and then we have Jamaica-based jamaicapressrelease.com and a sweet list of 50 free press release submission websites.
Now not all press release submission websites are created equal. Most tends to simply allow you to upload the text and make your release available to the readers who come to the site. Other sites are what I call fully loaded- meaning you can submit a press release with live links back to a desired website; they allow photos, videos and audio; their site has rss feeds; is syndicated to mainstream journalists; has relationships with a network of influential bloggers;is regularly picked up by major search engines such as Google and Yahoo and more; and some are targeted to specific industries such as technology or business or travel. So it means seeking to find what matches your online publicity needs.

I discovered pileojobs.com on Twitter this week. It’s a simple solution to a real problem. There are now over 20 Caribbean job sites and really who has time to go to all of them. Pileojobs.com solves this problem…as they said one search gives you access to hundreds of jobs. They launched in beta this week.

Yeahhh we’re working ourselves out of this recession local, regional and global, and while a positive attitude, perseverance and persistence are totally necessary, we need information too. So if you’re the kind of entrepreneur or business that love to tender for contracts then tendersjamaica.com.jm and caribbeantenders.com should be useful.
Both sites enable companies, government agencies, general institutions to post tenders for projects and consulting opportunities and of course if you’re looking for new business opportunities, you can search and find tenders across more than ten categories – ranging from construction and engineering, marketing and media, education and training, technology and communication.

Earlier this year, when I ventured off to LA for the Econ Music Conference, the first business card that I received was from a gentleman by the name of Caleb Pate. Very cool dude, he was the Music/Media Strategist for a company called Seeqpod. Execs from 3Jane and other companies were more than familiar with Seeqpod – it was very new to me. So after chatting with Caleb for a while I took a look at their site…..and thought “wow, niffty!” One site that can bring all the data on the internet (videos, reviews, photos, etc) to one flash player on any artist I like! Cool!
Kasian Franks, Raf Podowski, and Shekhar Lodha founded SeeqPod back in 2005 and in less than 2 years, managed to create a unique, easy-to-use search and discovery engines that has appealed to millions.
