Evan Williams had a great post on The StartupBlog Network titled, “ten rules for web startups” that every entreprenuer should read so I will reprint here:
#1: Be Narrow
Focus on the smallest possible problem you could solve that would potentially be useful. Most companies start out trying to do too many things, which makes life difficult and turns you into a me-too. Focusing on a small niche has so many advantages: With much less work, you can be the best at what you do. Small things, like a microscopic world, almost always turn out to be bigger than you think when you zoom in. You can much more easily position and market yourself when more focused. And when it comes to partnering, or being acquired, there’s less chance for conflict. This is all so logical and, yet, there’s a resistance to focusing. I think it comes from a fear of being trivial. Just remember: If you get to be #1 in your category, but your category is too small, then you can broaden your scope—and you can do so with leverage. MORE

At Kingston Beta last night, a bunch of us got to talking about the amazing profits being made by Jamaican porn sites such as smutvibes.com and rudejam.com. So one of my table mates dreamed up a domain name for his potential site. It was pantydrop.com. Thinking this is a very uniquely Jamaican way of a saying, he figured it would have been available. A check via whois.net revealed that it’s being sold on Sedo.com for….ahmm US$10,000. LOL.

PileoJobs.com pitch is what you missed at the last Kingston Beta, you may have missed the post I wrote days after it launched calling this Caribbean job search engine, a simple solution to a real problem. They now have added a social type of site pileojobs.net. Listen to the startup entrepreneur and founder Bill Bailey explain it in his own words.

GitHub is a site that brings together more than 70,000 developers who specialize in writing computer software for open-source distribution. They use the site to share ideas so others can borrow from, improve on, or add it to something else, change it—whatever. Most use the free tier of the site. Some companies, such as EMI and blogging software provider Six Apart, use the paid service to sharing internal company software projects. more

That was the question in essence that I was asked by a Jamaican university student today. He was doing some research on Caribbean Social Networks. He started out with the following premise…Caribbean social networks are not very well known if at all by most Caribbean people at home and abroad as they are already being bombarded by and are active on the American social networks like Facebook, My Space and Youtube. He then asked me..do I think that Caribbean culture can be eroded because of this? Is his premise sound? Are Caribbean people too caught up in the usual Americana? Do they want to see, be themselves online ? Can Caribbean social networks help spread and even strengthen Caribbean culture?
