SiliconCaribe TV went to the Digicel Electronics Show last weekend. Generally it was underwhelming for anyone who’s not impressed by the Blackberry cell phones, mirror televisions, Wiis and BOOMing audio systems. For us it was a case of been there, seen that, let them impress the late, late bloomers.
Without question though, with Digicel on board for what it’s worth it had greater organisation and finesse, but as is clear, the economics of a small Jamaican market doesn’t allow it to have anything at the level of COMDEX, unless, we bring COMDEX here. That said, we found a few gems… Two of them are in this episode. The other two in Episode 3 on Monday.
In this Episode 2:
-An Alternative Energy company that manufactures locally and
-A Tech company getting in the business of Digital Retailing via a Kiosk call the MaxBox. It acts as an ATM cash machine, digital juke box(select, buy and burn your CDs on spot), mobile top-up, mobile content download, digital photo processing, fun games, flowers and football photos.
David Mullings in front of the camera…so Check it…

This is a good start! I enjoyed learning about Gormann’s business.

the max box is a nice idea but i wonder what the uptake among the wider population will be. i also wonder about the business model. AIS seems to be going with an advertiser driven approach. is that really sustainable? when the additional functionality come on stream he says users will begin to pay per use essentially, how will they pay - cash, credit or debit cards?

with regards to burning CDs, that can be a legal mess and how will the trends in music consumption in Jamaica and globally affect their model?

i’d really like to hear more specifics about the part/s of the Jamaican demographic they see using this. and its seems to me that this thing would need a well supported promotional campaign to get the ordinary Jamaican to use it.
