We wrote a post on the Jamaica Gleaner last week with the headline- “ Jamaica Gleaner,Caribbean’s oldest newspaper profits plummets, vows to focus on increased market share online” which became the hot post for the week. It had a just under 20 comments amongst all of that was a continuous banter between two regular bog readers that was a Gleaner vs Observer war of words of sort.
The debate raged as to which site is really number one. So we decided to dig up some stats and see what comes out of it. We used both Alexa.com(owned by Amazon.com) and Compete.com as references. Here are the results.
According to Alexa.com
1. JamaicaObserver.com as a 24,350 traffic rank
Jamaica-Gleaner has a 20,359 traffic rank
2. On JamaicaObserver.com the visitor spends an average time of 6.2 mins on the site.
On Jamaica-Gleaner the visitor spends an average time of 5.3mins on the site.
3. For JamaicaObserver.com there are 1,723 sites linking to it.
For Jamaica-Gleaner there are 3,434 sites linking to it.
Let’s move on to what Compete.com revealed when the two sites were compared. The first graphic shows their unique visitors per month and how those numbers have been trending whether up or down.
Conclusions, without question, The Jamaica-Gleaner has far more content online than the JamaicaObserver, yet the latter and younger newspaper has people staying on a little longer to read theirs. Additionally, the Jamaica Gleaner as about 40,000 more unique visitors per month than the Jamaica Observer and the trend over the last year has been that both sites have been trending up. A further look at the graphic will also give you a clue as to what search terms lead visitors to their sites, what are the top referring sites that brings them traffic as well. Interesting snapshot.

Compete.com comparison is interesting. Dunno much about that service.
Alexa numbers I don’t rely on too much though.
Not to mention that the writing in the Observer is superior to the Gleaner writing…which at times leaves much to be desired.
Where is Observer site with the BREAKING NEWS on Michael Jackson? I see Gleaner trying to keep up with their breaking news ticker tape, although the info is a few hours outdated. They still on the news anyway. Observer flops.
On second thought, I shouldn’t say the Gleaner were a few hours outdated. They’re not in a position to confirm the very latest of anything so they have to be careful with what they publish. In any case, Gleaner has proven themselves better than Observer on delivering a breaking news item. Observer is a non-starter, in this regard.
i prefer the Observer’s site personally.
Alexa’s ranking is bullshit and although Complete’s is not perfect it’s best we go with those general stats

When it comes to the stats, the Observer concedes that the Jamaica Gleaner is number one (#1). However, the Gleaner should not be comfortable as the competition appears to have made some inroads.
I will make a few more comments after I have had time to analyze the data. At that time I will give a statistics based analysis devoid on emotion.
@yardedge,
Thanks for the compliments in saying the Observer writing (writers) are better. I I hope Gleaner takes note
@Read This
I never knew you would see anything good going on with the Gleaner but I guess I was wrong.
The Gleaner is much more classy in its approach. The Obsever is more tabloid like exaggerated stories.
