2010 is Mobile Marketing’s big Year: Are you in on it?

Mobile Mania: Maybe the only marketing trend that is hotter than social media is mobile mania. Why? Globally there are four-times more cellphones than PCs worldwide. Locally, the mobile penetration is 100% in Jamaica. Generally it’s the favorite product of Gen Y. Factually, worldwide 130 billion texts will be sent a month. And I could go on and on but you’ll have to start paying me for that info. LOL.

So whether it’s mobile payments; mobile banking;  mobile remittances; creating a Mobile App for a client, offering customers mobile coupons or text message campaigns; mobile loyalty programmes; the ability to build their fanbase and community – 2010 is going to be Mobile Marketing’s big year in Jamaica, the Caribbean and Globally – Are you in on or will it pass it you by?

Why 2010? What’s different in 2010?

-The phones are smarter.

- the networks are faster.

- an open development ecosystem is leading to faster innovation, deployment of ideas.

- and digital marketing and mobile agencies have built up a solid knowledge base of what works.

Ingrid, who shall the main players be, to deliver the mobile mania in 2010? Shall it be Digicel Business along with their SMS Marketing and other services? Or the Gleaner with their mobile.jamaicagleaner.com? Who’s gonna make 2010 a big year for mobile marketing?

    Great questions….
Digicel Business and their SMS Marketing and other services. This continues, not sure what new they’ll be bringing.

    - We can expect number portability by summer.

    - We can expect CLARO to continue to use Digicel’s playbook against them and gain greater market share.

    - We can expect more growth the BlackBerry user market.

    - We can expect more mobile marketing cammpaigns.

    - We can expect the growth of mobile banking and mobile coupons.

    - We can expect more mobile apps from content providers like the Gleaner, Jamaicans.com

How about webisodes? Do you think they’ll do well in the Caribbean market. How about webisodes/short caribbean movies on the phone? Who are the players?

Good question, Cathy S. But since the soft launching of Digicel’s mobile Tv service, I haven’t seen a single promotion for it. If I remember correctly, the mobile TV only showing CVM-TV, HYPE TV and RE-TV. Nothing exclusive and worth paying 20.00 JMD a minute to see. They better go and sponsor some short film festivals around the Caribbean, with the Digicel Mobile TV brand, and pay Caribbean filmmakers to showcase their short films on a made-for-mobile channel. Otherwise, it’s a waste of time.

Remember also that Digicel has teamed up with Fimi Wireless and DC Digital to launch DigiTV. haven’t heard a pin drop on that project since its announcement, in November 2008. They said they were gonna roll-out the service in 2009. Now we’re in 2010, and Flow has the market in a vice grip! lol.

    Hi Ingrid,

I’ve read a couple of your posts regarding SMS/Mobile marketing and find them very interesting. How do you suggest one approach a mobile campaign in the Caribbean, contact Digicel or a mobile marketing agency? If so, which one?

Would really appreciate any and all tips.
