UK-based Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) has reportedly inked a deal with Swedish vendor Ericsson, which will see the latter modernise mobile infrastructure for CWC’s subsidiaries in twelve Caribbean countries.

According to a press release issued by Ericsson, it will deploy its latest core network and multi-standard radio base stations RBS 6000 for LIME, the Caribbean arm of CWC, which governs operations in: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Turks and Caicos.

The contract meanwhile also includes network design, rollout and professional services, which it is claimed will ‘pave the way for LIME to migrate its network to an all-IP architecture; improve coverage, capacity and quality; and prepare for a smooth introduction of HSPA Evolution (HSPA+) and Long Term Evolution (LTE)’. It was noted that HSPA+, offering downlink speeds of up to 21Mbps, is expected to be introduced in the Cayman Islands during the first phase of the network modernisation process, with rollout of the technology due to take place in ‘additional’ markets later in 2011.
