Who wants to be Mayor on Foursquare?

Who wants to be Mayor? on Foursquare that is. I’m really not surprised that Foursquare is taking off fast here in Jamaica, the land of  100% mobile penetration. Who doesn’t like clicking “check in” on their smart phones as they mosey on into their favourite places to drink, eat or when they’d arrive at their favourite club. It’s frankly addictive. I went to check on what’s been happening on Foursquare and got the above- New Crowned Mayors of Kingston,Jamaica where I’m located and also Where have some of my Foursquare friends recently checked in. I’m currently Mayor of Susie’s Bakery and Coffee Bar. I’m gunning for East Japanese next. And you?

Cuba reports little Internet and telecom progress

Cubans’ ability to communicate with one another and the world remained well below the norm for the Caribbean and Latin America in 2009, according to a government report released this week. Despite the legalization of mobile phones in 2008 there were just 1.8 million phone lines in the country, or 15.5 lines for every 100 inhabitants, which was the lowest in the region, according to the United Nations International Telecommunications Union.

The Power of Social Media: Facebook attack on KC vice-principal

An attack on a senior Kingston College (KC) administrator through the popular social-networking site Facebook, apparently in protest against a proposal to block underachieving boys from participating in the school’s graduation ceremony, has been roundly condemned.

Juliet Wilson, KC’s vice-principal, who had some sway in establishing graduation eligibility at the all-boy high school, had reportedly ruled that some boys – who either did not pass five Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate subjects or did not qualify in compulsory subjects such as mathematics and English in an internal exam – be deprived of the opportunity to graduate.

To press for a reversal, a Facebook page titled ‘Say No to Ms Wilson’ was created. It was reportedly littered with derisive remarks about the vice-principal.

When The Gleaner tried to visit the site last Thursday night, the page had already been removed. More

How We Did it: Digicel, the Caribbean Brand with the largest FaceBook Fan Page Community

Digicel the seven year-old company which joined the Telecom game in Jamaica and the Caribbean as the mouth-watering buffet in front of a starving man, is now the Caribbean Brand with the largest Facebook Fan Page Community. They achieved the 100,000 Fan milestone on Tuesday March 16, 2010.  They celebrated by running a full page ad in the newspapers and of course more giveaways as thanks to their fans.

Now in an environment where internet marketing professionals and entrepreneurs push to sell Caribbean brands on the validity and value of social media specifically and generally the necessity of having an internet marketing strategy and plan, Digicel with its achievement will no doubt drive the fan rush and social media push in Jamaica and the Caribbean. At least we hope so.

We spoke to Marketing Communications Manager, Tshani Jaja about Digicel, Social Media and the Caribbean.Share your comments or ask questions when you’re finished watching.

Bottom Feeder, Game Changer- Which one are you?

I remember when I had just started to grow my then web development company Dutchpot Interactive from 2003-2006. We enjoyed brisk business primarily because of our customer service, design talents and our keen understanding of the business context of why companies must be online. In house at our Seymour Park digs we had a team of 7 people. We won new business, we won retainers with corporate companies the whole nine yards.

Then things changed.

Where have all the Bahamas Social Sites Gone?

Today’s Bahamian internet ‘social’ landscape is pretty barren after starting off with quite a bang in the early, heady days of the Internet’s discovery in the region.

Back in the late 90s, and the early 2000’s we had many vibrant Bahamas centric sites like the Bahamas.com internet forum, Bahamanet.com, BahamiansOnline.com, Bahamas-mon.com Forums, Oii.net (Abaco Forum), Bahamascope.net, Bahamateens.net/com, Freeportteens.com and Briland.com that over time many have fallen by the wayside as the Bahamian and Visitors to the Bahamas have been pulled away to more global sites like facebook.com, myspace.com, hi5.com, blackplanet.com and tagged.com.
