The Facebook Era Has a Strong Business Angle

Social networks not only give companies broader access to new customers, they do it at unprecedented lower costs, according to Clara Shih, author of “The Facebook Era.” In a speech here Wednesday at the Web 2.0 Expo, Shih explained that she refers to the Facebook Era because the company dominates the social networking market with more than 400 million users.

“People spend over 20 billion minutes a day on Facebook — you have to be there,” Shih said. But it’s the broader social network movement, including Twitter, LinkedIn and a growing number of social networks in other countries that represent “a cultural movement” and a “new psychology,” she added.

Before Facebook, companies would have a hard — or at least expensive — time tailoring their marketing to the best projects. But Shih said Facebook profiles are a marketer’s dream because users reveal so much about their interests, such as favorite sports, hobbies and product preferences.

“When we moved from in-person meetings, to phone calls to Facebook, each time the cost of that communication goes down and our network grows,” she said. More

MyLife.com cool concept

MyLife.com is the fourth larget social network in terms of monthly unique visitors according to ClickZ.com. It’s new to me, so I had to share it. MyLife.cm is a people search. With a tag line tha states, Find Everyone, in One Place, the site scours 750+ million profiles – across the web’s most popular sites such as Facebook, Linkedin,Twitter, MySpace and Flickr! Then once you find who you’re looking for you can connect and manage those connections from the site. Warning though, it markets itself as America’s Number one people search…so don’t go on a rabid search for your Caribbean friends unless they are part of American centric social networks and pretty much most are.

I did a search for my name on the site and sure enough, links to Facebook and Linkedin profiles where I used my real name of course popped up. To view those profiles and connect, you do have to join mylife.com of course. Useful tool. I like.

More Adults Than Ever on Social Networks

Ok, Ok, I’m on a social media kick here…but come on, you have to admit there is some pretty cool stuff happening out there. Take a read of this. The share of adult internet users who are involved in social networking online has more than quadrupled in the past four years in the U.S. In 2005, only 8% of adults had a social network profile. As of December 2008, that number was 35%. What motivates those in older generations to go online? Is it the opportunity to professionally network with their colleagues? The answer may surprise you. Future trends in business communications: Phone stops ringing, eMail slows down, Social Nets & Media explode

I don’t know about you but I have been observing a significant shift in how people communicate, professionally as well as socially and privately. While only 7-10 years ago, most of the work was done on the phone (I recall living in .com boom-town numero uno, San Francisco, and using up all my 2000 AT&T minutes every single month!), eMail soon became big with everyone, and now eMail is still pretty much the prime vehicle of business communications – thus the rise of blackberry mania. Use of the phone declined heavily as a result.

Now, it seems that… well, eMail is for old people. About 18 months ago, the use of ‘social’ business platforms such as LinkedIn became more prevalent, and all of a sudden people started to have ‘professional’ conversations on LinkedIn, Ryze (remember??), Xing, and then, soon, Facebook, Myspace, and now… Twitter, Skype and GTalk. Now, for me, it has already become the No. 1 method of how people reach out to me: rather than calling (ouch) or even emailing (ehem), people ping me via my various networks – and I think this will increase drastically because it provides a build-in filter as you have to be in my network to ping me via the Network. My LinkedIn Success Stories

I had a bit of an email banter with a friend of mine about the benefits of sites such as linkedin.com and now a Caribbean version caribaxispro.com.  She said, “You’re going to have to convince me of the benefit in signing up. It requires so much detail which I don’t know why I’d want to store in a public place and for what now?

Six Simple Steps to Generate Business from LinkedIn

OK, that title seems a little redundant, right? I mean, LinkedIn is a business networking site. However, a lot of people sign up for LinkedIn but never use it beyond occasionally accepting someone’s invitation to join their network.
