Jamaica Tourist Board to invest more in social media

The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) two years ago joined the throng of marketers tapping social networking sites as a way to drum up business when it revamped its website.

Now, the agency is investing millions to develop a channel on YouTube, according to David Shields, deputy director of tourism in charge of marketing at the JTB.

“What we are using the social media to do is to engage a social environment and interaction and hopefully, conversion of sales,” said Shields. “We can also use the social media not just to engage persons, but also to deal proactively with issues that we might want to focus on.”

The Number 1 reason Jamaican companies are scared of Social Media

Social Media and all its multiple touch points (Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, social networks, share buttons and f=Forums) scares some Jamaican companies. They are afraid to put their company and its products and services up to public scrutiny. “What do we do with all the negative comments ?” -This is the most popular response I’ve heard over the last year from some company executives as they’ve assumed that is all they will get . The two other typical responses have been “Why do we have to be so directly connected to people online ? ” , and “Ok ok so if we are really going to place ourselves out there who is going to manage it ?”

What Can a Facebook Fan Page do for Brand Jamaica ?

I’m Jamaican and am always searching for things Jamaican and Caribbean on the social networks that I’m a member of. So Facebook is no different. One of those searches yielded a link to a Fan Page branded simply Jamaica under the travel category. It has 35,045 fans from across the world, this, despite that the creator of the Fan Page has never advertised it (except to his circle of Facebook friends) and has not updated it since August last year…coincidentally, the month of the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, when Jamaica’s sprint factory credentials yielded an amazing show. This has not stopped the fans from joining, continuously updating the Page with their favourite pictures, shout outs and instant reviews on where they’ve visited, how much they loved it and why. Now this is powerful stuff and I let me share with you why.

No more Bullshit: The Ramblings of a Jamaican Toilet Paper Tech Entrepreneur

Been reminded again, of just how a good book can be so damn disruptive to your life. I have to admit, when I first heard about the Toilet Paper Entreprenuer, Mike Micalowicz, I listened politely and then immediately forgot about him. Even as I trust the opinion and recommendations of my regular guest blogger David Mullings, CEO of Real Vibez Media. In fact it was David who flew Mike down the first time he came to speak in Jamaica and it was to a bunch of University students at the University of the West Indies. Sorry David. ☺
You see I’ve read A LOT of best selling business books and I’ve gotten something out of most of them. But honestly I’d told myself already…ok enough business books, just get on with the business of welll, running my business. Plus I’d have my share of successes and failures, so what’s the big deal anyway. That changed this week. It started with me prepping for the event, Mike’s second speaking engagement in Jamaica this time brought down by Gale Peart, Ceo of MyEliteGrocer.com to speak at the Technology Innovation Centre at the University of Technology.

Across industries, Caribbean companies are in an experimental stage with social media

As I continue to get an increased number of calls and email queries about How Can I use Social Media to market my company, product, music or event it brought to my mind this thought. It doesn’t matter if you’re Grace Kennedy, Digicel, the local restaurant or retail store around the corner, or a musician – no one person or company’s approach on entering social media can be considered is the only way, the right way, the best way. Why? SImply because like with any other marketing channel, at the end of the day it’s about understanding the lay of that land, understanding the inherent opportunities there and developing a unique strategy where your company, your brand, your product meets its goals and effectively as possible leverage the medium.

In September 2007 I could count on my right hand, the amount of Jamaican Facebook groups that existed.
