Jamaica Tourist Board Facebook Fan Page to hit 70,000 today

The Official Facebook Fan Page of the Jamaica Tourist Board(JTB) http://www.facebook.com/Jamaica is expected to hit 70,000 Fans today. They took over the Fan page from David Mullings, RealVibez Media who started it in the year of Olympics in 2008, awesome timing, but lost admin rights for over a year because of some Facebook rule which no longer exists thankfully.

The love of Jamaica never waned though as Fans across the world kept it going and growing. Mullings handed it over to JTB who officially took it over just over a month ago, got admin rights restored to the JTB and started started updates along a structure and strategy ( which included the design of custom pages MyJa, VibesJa, AboutJa) now unfolding as the Jamaica Tourist Board gets more social – on Facebook, Twitter soley tweeting promotions and deals and YouTube with three channels VibesJamaica, AboutJamaica, MyJamaica with many more Internet marketing initiatives to unfold over the next year.

It is a recognition by the leadership of the JTB  that over 70% of travel decisions are made online and increasingly those  buying decisions are being influenced by varying factors, the most recent and most potent of which is social media.

The Facebook Era Has a Strong Business Angle

Social networks not only give companies broader access to new customers, they do it at unprecedented lower costs, according to Clara Shih, author of “The Facebook Era.” In a speech here Wednesday at the Web 2.0 Expo, Shih explained that she refers to the Facebook Era because the company dominates the social networking market with more than 400 million users.

“People spend over 20 billion minutes a day on Facebook — you have to be there,” Shih said. But it’s the broader social network movement, including Twitter, LinkedIn and a growing number of social networks in other countries that represent “a cultural movement” and a “new psychology,” she added.

Before Facebook, companies would have a hard — or at least expensive — time tailoring their marketing to the best projects. But Shih said Facebook profiles are a marketer’s dream because users reveal so much about their interests, such as favorite sports, hobbies and product preferences.

“When we moved from in-person meetings, to phone calls to Facebook, each time the cost of that communication goes down and our network grows,” she said. More

8 Startup Pitches at our Kingston Beta Tech Event Next Thursday

It’s something you may have heard me tweet about, write about or talk about in the last few months- that this year is the tipping point for the Internet in Jamaica and the Caribbean. You can see the activity online – fresh blogs, new sites, niche social networks, more people and brands on Facebook, on Twitter, companies spending on Google Ads and Facebook ads. For those of us with service agencies, you can tell via the increased number of phone calls and emails. The marketing bubbling is real, very palpable.

Hip Hop’s Use of Twitter

The hip hop community is one that quickly embraces new social media technology. Artists started using Ustream and Twitter long before the average person picked up those tools. All of your favorite rappers, from Jay-z to Chingy, have created accounts to further their personal brand. However, just like putting rhymes together, some artists tweet better than others.

An example of a hip hop artist building a community on Twitter is Young Money’s Nicki Minaj. Nicki’s followers have been growing rapidly over the past few months, bringing her to the current count of 530,150. Having not yet released an official album, the large Twitter following is very impressive. More

Jamaica Tourist Board’s Visit Jamaica Twitter ID brandjacked?

Less than two weeks ago, Jamaica Tourist Board( JTB) announced that it’ll be paying attention to more social media. Duh, they are about a year late and I do hope that includes giving their website a social and design make over too. As too often we see organisations who feel that see social media as the curious after thought not as an integral part of their marketing strategy. No surprise then that their twitter.com/visitjamaica , @visitjamaica ID is well gone, taken…brand jacked by some person who captured it from

Jamaica Tourist Board to invest more in social media

The Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) two years ago joined the throng of marketers tapping social networking sites as a way to drum up business when it revamped its website.

Now, the agency is investing millions to develop a channel on YouTube, according to David Shields, deputy director of tourism in charge of marketing at the JTB.

“What we are using the social media to do is to engage a social environment and interaction and hopefully, conversion of sales,” said Shields. “We can also use the social media not just to engage persons, but also to deal proactively with issues that we might want to focus on.”

How to protect your ideas in the digital age

Seth Godin, who has written 12 bestsellers that have been translated into 33 languages, is an in demand global speaker, digital age trend watcher and thinker is one of my mentors. I’ve bought and read his books, watched his videos and read his blog religiously.

I was commissioned to do an all day workshop with Jamaica Trade and Invest /JAMPRO on December 3rd at the Jamaica Conference Centre where I spoke to just under 100 Jamaican entrepreneurs of Micro, Small, Medium -sized businesses. I prepared a 95 slide power point presentation which was in demand at the end of the day. I pondered whether to just give it away, selectively do so or not at all.

So I asked Seth and my other colleague and mentor Gerd Leonhard, The MediaFuturist – he too is a blogger, global speaker, trendwatcher and ebook publisher. Gerd in a reply email said “My philosophy is ‘knowledge grows when shared’ and I have had a very good experience with that so far. I only publish PDFs though, not PPTs, and only use creative commons licensed images (Flickr) or iStockphoto.com or fair use stuff. If it’s free published I have never had a real issue.Cheers from Switzerland and let’s do something together in Jamaica one of these days;)”

I emailed Seth and asked him too, he too replied promptly and said…“I don’t share mine, because they have no text and make no sense..but if they had text, I’d share em.” So I followed their advice I shared my PDF Presentation…on Facebook, on Twitter and my Company Blog as a free download. And I more ebooks coming too and my roster for speaking in increasing too.

Jamdowndigital.com Reggae music songs and videos by paid subscription

(New to Me) I can’t remember where I saw Jamdowndigital but it caught my eye. I’ve been so tired of seeing music and entertainment sites that throw free music videos and free songs your way with no true road to sustainability i.e..profitability. Hence it was damn refreshing to see someone offering a service and charging for it.The well thought and designed site is a contender and yes a competitor to PuKSHOP.
