Craigslist to expand and go local

You’ve heard about craiglist.org right? It’s pretty much the largest classifieds ad site in the world, the 7th most visited site in the USA, that generates more than 600 million free classified listings a year, makes between US$80-100m USD a year for charging modest fees for real estate and job listings in certain cities. If you haven’t…well?!

Anyway, the owner Craig Newmark, announced that his 13 year old site’s expanding and while previously that would mean that he’s adding more cities and territories (yes there is already a Caribbean classifieds site within craigslist) this time he’s going micro and digging deeper. In short, he’s going beyond the country and city level, he’s going very, very local – targeting small towns, provinces etc.

What this means in the case of the Caribbean for example – while the site already has a Caribbean section, what will now happen is that you will be able to find a local classifieds site for Port of Spain Trinidad or Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Sounds like a Jamaica and Trinidad classifieds site killer eh? Something to watch.
N.B eBay, owns 28% of craigslist.org
