Facebook was used to kick start a protest that is seeking to rally Jamaicans to protest against Jamaica Public Service (JPS) the country’s sole electricity provider for what has been called be Black Friday. Jamaicans are being asked to wear  black and turn off the breakers to their homes and businesses as an action to show their frustration and disgust.

The campaign born on Facebook via a Fan Page as well as splintered groups ( we counted 6) is being pushed to new levels with the use of Blackberry Messenger, Email and Twitter. It has been gaining momentum as thousands of Jamaicans have been getting increasingly frustrated and angry about the seeming unchecked rise in their monthly light bills even with a general acceptance of rising global world oil prices. Some Jamaican businesses are also on the edge, worried if they’ll join a seemingly growing list of businesses who’ve had to downsize their operations or worse close down.

We’ll be reporting on the results of the protest this Friday via our Twitter @siliconcaribe.com
