Eastern Caribbean Telecommunication (Ectel) slams Digicel’s ‘interception’

On Thursday, Digicel issued a news release in which it agreed with the position taken by the telecommunications regulator in the Eastern Caribbean (Ectel) on the acquisition by Cable & Wireless Communications of Columbus International.In the statement, Digicel described as “dismissive statements… constituting an insult to the regulatory authorities and Governments of the Ectel member states; and, particularly, those of Grenada, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines” the announcement by CWC and Columbus that regulatory notifications and approvals would be required in the United States, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad.  But the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority also sharply criticised Digicel for its position on so-called over-the-top operators—like Tango and Viber—that offer voice over IP services, which allow users to make phone calls using data from existing mobile networks.
