As we continue to chronicle how Caribbean people and businesses are using Facebook. We have a couple of gems for you today. It’s the weekend, so why not start with something that for some maybe a little eyebrow raising.

Caribbean Gay Community using Facebook big time.

Facebook is indeed a great enabler for creating community and fostering communication for all kinds of purposes. Generally out of mainstream’s primary consciousness for the most part Caribbean gay groups and people have jumped on Facebook feet first and eyes open. They are making the most of it. They are using it as a place to date across Caribbean countries and cross continent; as a place to form their own mini walled gardens, a relative safe place out in the open online.

The two Caribbean nations that are ruling the online Gay Caribbean scene generally and by extension in Facebook are Jamaicans and Trinidadians with Bajans and OECS countries right behind them. When you search groups with the keyword gay, you have 500 groups that roll on to your screen. But the Gay Caribbean Groups that standout is Dsistahood a Trinidadian group that’s known for it’s amazing large parties in Port of Spain consistently number over 1,000. They have a facebook group through which they promote their parties and allow it’s members to meet each  other online as well as interface with other Caribbean and globa gay and lesbian groups in Facebook. The other group is Rainbowvibes.com which launched the first Caribbean Gay and Lesbian social network and dating site about seven weeks ago. They have set up both a Facebook group and a Fan Page. I guess as the group description from another group Jamaica bisexual men and women stated, they are here, they’re queer and are clearly now online big time.

 CaribbeamResumes.com

Yes it’s another jobsite but what I like is that the site leads from the angle of the jobseeker, hence the name caribbeanresumes.com and the slogan “Get Hired”. They launched their Facebook group of course to increase awareness of the site about Caribbean Facebook users and to drive traffic to the site and sign ups on the site. They’ve also not waited until people surf on over to the site, they’ve been using the post and wall features of the Facebook group to post job alert to keep the communication flow constant. They’ve been rewarded as their group is growing at a merry clip to here it is today at 2050. It would be interesting to hear how in hard numbers the Facebook Group has help their site grow in traffic and sign ups.

Mi done.
