I was interviewed by Xavier Murphy, who founded the longest running Jamaican Diaspora Website jamaicans.com about KingstonBETA is the longest-running tech start-up event in the region’s technology sector. How did this event brand from SiliconCaribe kickstart the Tech Startup Scene in Jamaica, attracted over 10,000 attendees, along with 400 tech entrepreneurs from eight Caribbean nations and the Diaspora in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Jamaica’s Tourism being driven by technology

Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, credits technology with the record number of tourists that arrived in the island last year. Speaking at the recent Global Digital Marketing Summit, that had its main conference room at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston, Barlett also dismissed claims that Jamaica’s fortune was as a result of the damage to other small islands by hurricanes.

According to Barlett, Jamaica’s tourism product have been boosted by the Ministry of Tourism employing a number of technology-based solutions, including using online booking agency, Airbnb, which added another dimension to the tourism product.

BARBADOS-BASED BLOCKCHAIN LEADER BITT NAMES BRIAN POPELKA PRESIDENT

Medici Ventures’ blockchain portfolio company Bitt announces the appointment of former Overstock.com executive Brian Popelka as Bitt president. Bitt is a Barbados-based FinTech company developing a digital currency ecosystem in the Caribbean using blockchain and distributed ledger technology.

Woman-developed App for Barbados Crop Over in time for this year!

The D’Junction app, developed in Trinidad and Tobago launched in time for Crop Over 2018 in Barbados. The app’s developer, Ria Karim, a Trinidadian businesswoman, cited examples of technology at use for events around the world, and noted that it is her intention that we in the Caribbean will similarly leverage digital platforms to reach our existing consumers as well as new markets around the world.

Local innovation features Wi-Fi without Internet connection

A local innovation featuring an interactive, digital experience with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), via smartphones and without need for any Internet connection, debuted for the first time at the Go For The Goals roadshow on the SDG and Vision 2030 in Morant Bay, St Thomas, last week.

Cybercrime is not very common in Belize, at least not yet. But internet scam artists are making their way into the country and it appears that they are presently out to steal your money through your online bank account. The Management of Heritage Bank has sounded the alarm on this.
